Celebrate Earth Day by visualizing the largest urban solar power plant with concept3D.
Today, Exelon and SunPower announced plans to develop a 10 megawatt solar power plant in the south side of Chicago- the largest of its kind in an urban setting http://www.exeloncorp.com/aboutus/news/pressrelease/corporate/090422_Exelon+and+SunPower+to+Develop+Nations+Largest+Urban+Solar+Power+Plant.htm. Considering this monumental announcement, on Earth Day nonetheless, we decided to create a real-virtual view of the array using Google Earth, SketchUp and some other tools at our disposal.
The video flies take you to some Chicago landmarks and then on to the site of the Exelon Southeast Chicago City Solar Project. Using Google Earth imagery we presented the ‘brownfield’ as it sits today and then fade to a rendering of the area post development. Additionally, we used some animation techniques to show the SunPower Tracker product following the sun through the day. Lastly we use gray boxes of homes and convert to green to represent the impact of the development.
We hope you enjoy seeing this landmark solar development in the geoweb.

[...] Concept3D has created a 3D visualization of the solar power project viewable in Google Earth. They shared a YouTube video yesterday which starts with a brief tour of Chicago, and then flies to the east side of Chicago where the plant is proposed to be built. They show the current site, then add 3D models of the photovoltaic solar panels. Not only that, but they show how the panels will track the sun as it passes over each day. The visualization then illustrates how a large community of houses can be served by the energy created by the plant. See the video below: [...]
